Does anyone know any good meat alternative products?
Are the morningstar farms any good?
And are meat alternatives better for your body than real meat ( like chicken ).Meat alternatives...............?
Commercial meat alternatives are usually highly processed so they have a different set of concerns from meat. They are usually much higher in sodium but have no saturated fat or cholesterol. That said, I really enjoy the Tofurky line. The sausages, roasts, and deli slices are all among my favorites. I like Yves Veggie Cuisine breakfast sausages. For chicken I think Gardein comes closest (and if you are in Canada you can get it cheaply in store brand President's Choice World's Best Meatless Chicken Breasts). My favorite veggie burger is Veggie Patch Garlic-Portobella Patties (they are not suitable for vegans, though). I more often use tofu, homemade seitan, or TVP as meat replacements than prepared products because I have more control over what's going into it.
Tempeh and miso are some of the best soy products for you, unrefined and unprocessed.
Although many alarmist websites advertise the evils of refined soybean products (which carries no hard-backed evidence [1]), as a complete protein, tofu is very useful if learned to cook properly, and, similarly to mushrooms, can take on the flavor of what it is being cooked with.
Beware of beans: while being some of the most healthy foods you can eat as a vegetarian, it is an incomplete protein, so if you eat it with a grain, such as rice, pasta, or corn bread, it will be far more suitable.
Nuts are good for you, peanuts being one of the best nuts for protein. And not to sound like a rotten hippy, but beware of the regular, delicious peanut butter. The reason why it holds its creamy consistency, as opposed to natural peanut butter, is because it contains very small amounts of partially hydrogenated oils, which human evolution has not been suited to store, and has been linked to heart disease, and high cholesterol. Though containing very little of this bodily carcinogen, you and I are more likely to eat more peanut butter for protein intake, so if you want to minimize health risk you might want to go to the all-natural stuff (my deepest apologies, btw).
I use a layer of avocados as a meat substitute when available, and have developed a fondness for red beets, which are overlooked by many in the US as a suitable, healthy snack.
And yes, I love morningstar sausages, they're a really good imitation. Amy's is good if you ever don't feel like cooking and just need a frozen TV dinner. BUT DO NOT GO FOR TOFURKEY, IT IS THE DEVIL, I TELL YOU!Meat alternatives...............?
Morningstar tastes good, but look at the ingredient list- list is huge- lots of processed stuff and additives. I prefer Amy's frozen line. There's 4-5 different kinds of burgers and they each taste different- they all taste good- you have to taste them to figure out which one you like the best. There's a Bistro, All-American and I can't think of the others. Most grocery stores have fresh veggie burgers in the produce dept- those taste good too.
i'm still a carnivore but being as my wife eats alot of tofu i've gotten into that and i have some vegetarian friends that use tofu, beans, and mushrooms as meat substitutes. they don't really use the name brands because alot of them use additives and other things to simulate taste etc.Meat alternatives...............?
I've eaten those. I don't like them. Boca fake chicken isn't so bad, but I usually don't eat any of that stuff.
They are too processed and full of additives. I honestly think that just eating meat would be healthier, although not nearly as healthy as replacing it with things like tofu, beans, some cheese, eggs...
im sure your tired of hearing about tofu
but once you figure out how to make it its amazing
first time i tried it i hated it. but once i tried making it a different way i thought it was amazing
try finding a tofu taco recipe. its my favorite food now and a good way for beginners to get used to the taste and texture.
The Best Vegan Meat Company in my opinion is DEFINETLY LifeLight.
fish, eggs, tofu, beans %26amp; peanuts
Tofu there are some great things that can be cooked up with tofu
curtdude
Try tofu, the extra firm kind for stir frys. You can try tempeh, seitan, TVP (texturized vegtable protein) which can act like ground meat. Morningstar farms is good. I especially love their "Chik'n" products. Boca is another brand to try, but I prefer morningstar over them.
Chicken and fish are better than red meat. Some other alternatives (that taste like meat) are eggplant parmagiana and shitake mushrooms.
