Is a hummer really that bad for the environment?

I'm thinking about buying one, are they?Is a hummer really that bad for the environment? The Hummer is fine. Every modern car and truck has a computer in it that keeps the fuel air mixture at 14.7 to 1. This mixture is the ideal because it would burn complete with no emissions . of course you cant be exactly 14.7 to 1 but it is close and the stuff that doesn't burn goes into the catalytic converter which acts like a filter and burns off the rest. almost nothing bad comes out the tailpipe. as long as you keep the Hummer maintained and tuned up you will be fine. you will burn more fuel but the emissions will be very low.

The effects of fuel consumption on the environment seem to have been grossly exaggerated.

Hummers are very divisive - some people love them some hate them.

Why is a hummer important to your success? Hummers were originally designed for the military. Are you planning on crashing through barracades or running other people off the road? People generally buy Hummers because they like the idea of a hummer, not because they acutally want to use it's capabilities. Is a hummer really that bad for the environment? No vehicle is bad for the environment if it is the minimum necessary to do the job. No one complains about the mileage of 18 wheelers because they haul so much of our goods to market. If the hummer is necessary to get the job done it is no worse than any other vehicle. But if it is necessary because you want to look macho, is is the worse vehicle you could own.
Depends on what Hummer, the Hummer H3 is no worse than any other mid sized off road vehicle (and it's also reasonably sized) and if you actually need the off road capability it is very good at it (though make sure you can handle driving a truck, because that's what a Hummer is).

OTOH if you're just looking for a status symbol and don't need off-road capability you'd be much better served with a luxury sedan. Is a hummer really that bad for the environment?Short answer - YES!

Long answer - Any vehicle that burns more fuel and therefore emits more carbon than neccessary to do the job is bad for the envronment, be it a Ferrari, Hummer, Rolls Royce or vintage car of most descriptions (including hippys' camper vans!)

If you have a large family then you'll need a large family car, but a Hummer is way OTT in any circumstance.

Please don't.Is a hummer really that bad for the environment?
Considering how much gas they guzzle up, yes. And with the current economy and oil prices, why would you consider getting a Hummer? Huge waste of money if you ask me.

If you can wait, get the Volt that's coming out in 2010 by GM.

It has a lithium-ion battery that will run for 40 miles on electricity before having to switch to gas. While its on gas, it recharges the battery using the heat produced every time you brake.
A more pertinent question might be...

Do I really need a modified army vehicle to ferry my kids to and from school and/or bring home the groceries?

I would consider what you need the car for (be honest!), your local traffic conditions (a Hummer in narrow city streets is a bad idea), where you would store The Beast, whether you can afford to run the thing and so on. Compare the fuel usage and efficiency of this vehicle with others in its class and then with the car you actually need. I think you'll find that a Hummer is quite thirsty.

If you still consider a vehicle big enough to ferry Gov. Schwarzenegger around desirable, well... Perhaps you should a have a chat with him about converting yours to biofuels or hydrogen use.

The H3 went on sale here (Aus) about a year ago but has had very poor sales here, the main, offroading, is quite popular here with vehicles like the Landcruser and the Nissan Patrol being preferred, While the H# is built for those who want to think they are Arnold Swartznagger, as a 4x4 it just isn't very good, any time spent in remote areas here reveals 95% of people use the 2 Japanese vehicles in preference to most others they are more reliable and fuel efficient.
A Hummer is a symbol of how soccer moms drive over-sized SUVs and what that does to the auspicious consumption of gasoline in the US. So Hummers, by their nature, are symbols of our overzealous consumption and lack of care about nature.

Why would it be necessary for your success?

It is still not a very bright choice to make because you could get a Tahoe which is the same chassis as the H2 or a Blazer which is the same Chassis as the H3 and get get a 10th of the flack from civilians!
If you can afford the fuel. What a waste of money buy something you can actually use and not a fuel guzzler.
I got a hummer last night and the world is fine, just fine ....
kind of...
