I'm looking for strips of flavored tofu to go in my veggie fajitas. I've tried the Morningstar Farms strips and didn't care for them, does anyone else have favorites?Best soy substitutes in fajitas?
Vegetarian Frajitas
An all vegetarian version of an otherwise well known meat dish. The name "fajitas" refers to the type of meat used in the traditional version. In this recipe the meat is replaced with onions, sweet peppers, corn and beans
.I N G R E D I E N T S
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 cup quartered, sliced onion
1 cup red, green or yellow bell pepper strips
1 (15-ounce) can black, pinto or kidney beans, drained
1/2 cup frozen whole kernel corn
1 (1.25-ounce) package Taco Seasoning Mix
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
6 (6-inch) fajita-size flour tortillas, warmed

Heat vegetable oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and bell pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir in beans, corn, fajita seasoning mix and water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until mixture thickens. Remove from heat; stir in cilantro.Spoon 1/2 cup fajita mixture onto each tortilla; fold in half.
I really like Veat brand. I'm not sure if they have fajita strips pre se but I know there stuff tastes great.Best soy substitutes in fajitas?
The morningstar ones I tried once and they made me sick to my stomach (had this awfully strange flavor and feeling associated with them.) You could try freezing some tofu in strips then dethawing and sponge em out then marinate them in some soy sauce/braggs, olive oil and maybe some onion powder and then bake/pan fry them slightly.
why not just skip the soy and use beans and rice with lime?Best soy substitutes in fajitas?
I love making veggie fajitas. I cook them pretty much like Mevlana does, but without the corn (I can't stand corn in other foods like in soups or rice or cornbread!). I also usually don't bother with the taco seasoing - I just add salsa and guacamole to stir fried peppers and onions. I did want to add, though, that if you really wanted something else in there maybe you could marinate strips of tofu in a mesquite lime marinade and grill them with the peppers and onions? It sounds really good to me! I'm going to give it a try. Also, I highly recommend Trader Joe's handmade corn tortillas if you don't make your own.
Forget fake meat substitutes! Marinate portobello mushrooms in olive oil, worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, black pepper, salt. garlic and a dash of A-1. Make some awesome homemade guacamole, pico and mince up some cilantro. You will not miss the meat at all. I have fed these fajitas to meat loving my in-laws and they never even asked if they were vegetarian or not. Actually my mom in-law asked for the mariande recipe.
I agree with you, the Morningstar strips are gross. Try the Quorn tenders (they are more like bite size) and very good.
